Many Options When it Comes to Advanced Accounting Degrees
When one thinks about accounting they would probably never think that a person would need to continuously upgrade their education in order to stay competitive in that particular job market. But in actuality, the accounting industry is one of the most competitive in terms of jobs being offered and the number of qualified people applying for them.
In order to stay current, most accountants will need to go back to school and upgrade their education. When a person already holds an associated degree or a bachelor’s degree in accounting they will need to return to school to complete what is known as an advanced degree.
What people do not know is that there is more than one option when it comes to advanced degrees. There are in fact at least four or more advanced degrees that are commonly sought after. Listed below are some of the most popular advanced degrees pursued by accountants.
Ph.D.
While it hasn’t been the choice of most accountants to work towards a doctorate in accounting, more accountants are realizing that importance of having the best education possible and this will ensure that they stay competitive in this area. This is also a great route to take for future professors.
Masters in Accountancy
This is the advanced degree that almost all accountants work towards, as it is the one that focuses on the area of public accounting. In the last two years, enrollment in this degree program has increased by eighty-five percent with almost all people graduating with their degree.
If you are lucky you can find a school that offers this degree program in conjunction with an undergrad degree in accounting. In total you will need to spend at least five years working toward your bachelor degree and then your Master’s degree. The time spent in school will be well worth it when you are able to obtain sustainable employment quickly and easily.
Masters in Taxation
This is one of the less common advanced degree types, as many people haven't considered seeking a degree that focuses on taxes. However, choosing a specific concentration will make you more competitive within that field.
Masters of Business Administration
An MBA is the degree type that all young accountants aspire to. This is the advanced degree that people complete for after they have already become certified public accountants. Having this degree type will mean that you are eligible for higher level positions.
If you are not interested in any of the above advanced degree programs you may contact your local accounting school to find out what they have to offer. It is important that you remember that you need to stay competitive and you must therefore complete an advanced degree that will give you the skills and training that are needed in the world of accounting.
